Winterthur, Stadt im Umbruch

Andreas Wolfensberger has been photographing Winterthur, its people, everyday life and the city, since the 1960s. His pictures show the social change as well as the development of this Swiss industrial city into a service city with new neighborhoods, modern offices, a rich cultural offering and ambitious university students. Where once there were long-haired young people on mopeds in the streets, today there are young people in hoodies staring at their cell phones. And where once men with hats went to work, today a colorful, multicultural society hurries through the streets.

The attentive photographic documentation of these fifty years of Winterthur is accompanied by five authors who each revive a decade from a personal perspective. They describe the attitude to life, events and changes and, together with the photographs, bring the recent history of the city of Winterthur to life and make it comprehensible.
